With the "Living Christmas Tree" on the Oxnard holiday calendar
we are reminded of the many memories this program has created . . .
Audience members remember Mutant Ninja Turtles, or maybe Star Wars lazar beams, but for the cast and crew it's the boo boos that come with any live performance -- Like the year, "Superman" was supposed to fly across the stage. Most nights it went well, but then there was the night he didn't get enough of a push off and stopped dead still above the middle of the stage. Hanging there, he tried "swimming" to try to get going again. That didn't work so he just hung there until one of Santa's elves came out on stage, threw him a rope, and towed him across the rest of the way!
And speaking of elves, there was the year that one of the actors playing an elf had to leave rehearsal early one night. He had an important dinner engagement. He arrived at his dinner right on time still in his elf costume!! He forgot to change! His date was not amused.
One of our more elaborate sets was a ski lodge complete with a toboggan run that ran from high on the right wall, across the whole front of the stage, and out the small door on the left. One of the choir members was not scheduled to ride the toboggan, until one of the riders didn't show one evening. In the middle of a dance routine, as he gestured with his left arm, it was grabbed by a girl on her way to the ski lift. She pulled him right out of the dance line and dragged him up the ladder, got him settled and they were released.
The ride was smooth, quick and a bit exciting as they whizzed past the ski resort, past the stage and out the door, landing in a Big pile of pillows! Laughing as they crawled out of the pile, they returned to the stage hand in hand.
There was the waterfall that was built, not out of cement but of modeling plaster. It looked great until we filled it with water and the whole thing leaked right through and emptied itself under the stage! It was repaired, but had you looked under the stage, you would have seen one huge plastic "diaper" under that waterfall!
Probably the best memory is the marriage proposal on stage one opening night. Right at the very beginning of the show, the "shoppers" were supposed to be showing off what they had bought. In the space of 8 measures, the guy had to get the ring out, make his proposal, and get the ring on her finger. He then had to move to the other side of the stage for a dance routine and wasn't able to be near his intended for the next two hours! He never gave her a chance to reply and had to wait for an answer! However, the gal pretty much gave it away as she started her own dance routine right on stage and seemed to forget the music that night. Yes they got married.
With the return of the "Living Christmas Tree" we hope that we will be able to make memories for you and your family.
